The Longthorp family breed free range pigs. Our farm was originally a purely arable business growing crops. We started farming pigs some 20 years ago to make better use of the grain we were producing.

We have bred our pigs outside from the very beginning and in 2007 we decided to take it one step further, and after weaning carry on growing our pigs outside so that they would be 100% Free Range from start to finish.

Anna's Profile

Anna Longthorp

At the outset we had about 12 sows which we kept in huts next to our house where we bred and reared the pigs. I was eight years old when we began pig farming and I have been working with them ever since, much to my friends' amusement at school.

I have always believed that it is a better way of life for them as I'd much rather see them rolling around in the mud enjoying themselves than being locked up in a shed, unable to roam freely.

Keeping our pigs in plenty of chopped, fresh, clean straw, keeps them dry and provides material for pigs to play, which leads to greater contentement and therefore higher productivity and tastier meat.

Our efforts were awarded by winning one of the most prestigious awards in the industry - 2010 Pig Producer of the year and in 2011 Deliciously Yorkshire Supreme Champion for our belly pork, described by Rosemary Shrager as "Some of the best pork I have ever tasted in my life. Anna has a rare talent. She is passionate about quality and this shows in her product".

But this intro is just a start, I hope you like what you see and spend some time with us!

Enjoy!

P.S. - Outdoor Bred vs Free Range (Do you know the difference?)

Many people today assume that pigs reared outdoor are the same as free range pigs - they are wrong, there is a huge difference.  Want to know more ... Click Here

  Just what the customer wants...

Our research shows that people who are buying pork, look for the following:-

  • Locally produced
  • High Welfare
  • Good Value

They like to know where it has come from, that the animals have been cared for during their life and not transported half way across the country to be slaughtered. Consumers understand that high welfare has cost implications, but they still expect good value. By ensuring consistently high quality and low overhead costs we believe that we can offer a product that tastes great every time at a price that also offers fantastic value for money. Anna's happy trotters ticks all the boxes!
